wait bc im thinking about it i wanna say something about the phone number thing too. how I interpreted it is that the chance encounter between them came at an uncertain time for carmy and we obviously know he was in a transitory period w the restaurant what with the renovating and all, and i think some instinct in him did believe it was the Correct thing to do to give the wrong number to claire at the Very Last moment—read as right person wrong time. i think the pushing of being with her by everyone else as we see in the dinner party shows us that his love for her is potentially really just rooted in his desire for approval from his family. which is probably why her character felt so hollow and like. kinda Nothing?
her role to me whether intentional or not is Symbolic of that past and nostalgia and connection carm has to the familiar and also his actual family, INCLUDING all the anxiety and dread and stress that comes with all that good. And Likewise syd is Symbolic of that other world re the restaurant and his profession and passion for cooking, but whatever the show wants us to think or wherever it’s going, sydney is significantly more fleshed out of a character and an individual than claire is, and as a sydcarm truther i Truuuuly hope they’ll explore the conflict carm could potentially have w his relationship with syd, as in whether he views her only as that symbol vs as an individual with her own wants/needs/ambitions, and how thats going to play in their business partner dynamic
and like i tweeted about this re the lighting. but warm lighting = past, nostalgia anxiety etc and cool lighting = future uncertainty potential and stress, too but in the kitchen and in HIS kitchen his space
like the alley scene alone really nails that in the head
carmy having a panic attack to images of his girlfriend and only calming down at the thought of sydney !!!!!!!! soulmates soulmates soulmates
To all the platonic soulmate Sydcarmy truthers....

When the priest stands up and gives the benediction and the DJ starts playing Frankie Valli's Can't Take My Eyes Off of You and Cece Winans' I Promise and Nat, Pete, Richie, Fak, and Sydney's Dad start bawling and crying in the wedding because their babies are all grown up, what then?
